Summary
July 1
Race 3 started off bizarre, at best. There was an extra horn blown
which threw off various skippers in various ways. Some were early and
called back, Grins, Sling Shot, and Rossinante, some were late and thought
they were early, Blidevind, and some thought they were late but were right
on time! The near-gale winds did not help, as every boat on the course was
overpowered but none were willing to give up speed by reducing sail. As
Rossinante made her re-start around the start pin, she got in the way of Tango
who was roaring along for a solid start on starboard tack. He had to
give way as Rossinante was unable to in time. And though Rossinante did
her 360 immediately, having thrown Tango off his course and forcing him to
restart caused him to lose all hope of placing for that race. The race
to the windward mark was harrowing with all the wind, somehow Rossinante beat
her entire class to the mark in spite of her dual pirouettes at the start line,
and the rounding at the mark was wild with close quarters, but no contact made.
Other than being severely overpowered, and therefore very exciting, race one
ran its course with no further mishaps.
Race 4 had a clean start, but again,
we were all overpowered. On the first windward leg Rossinante got laid over
taking green water over her gunnels, when she rounded up so fast completely
out of control that she stood up and laid back over the other direction,
having made an instant 180 degree flip, the soggy genoa sheet never had a chance
to get untied and the whole sail backwinded and laid her over, this time directly
in starboard Tango's path again ,
who was so laid over that we could see air under his keel , and
somehow he had the control and experience with another Catalina rounding
up so fast like that, that he kept Tango on a straight course in spite of
laying over so far, avoiding what appeared to Rossinante's skipper as
a potentially fatal accident. For that avoidance Rossinante is eternally
grateful to Tango's competant single-handing skipper. GOOD JOB, Bob. The
rest of the race was again fast and exciting, with winds gusting up to 32
mph, or so, and it was a good race day for all involved.
Readers may notice
this write up is heavily weighted in Rossinante's view of the races. This
writer requested race stories from all the boats for
a good race writeup, having been so busy on Rossinante I didn't have time
to observe how everyone else fared. From Bob Miles on Sling Shot:
During second race going upwind we lost our tiller extender making
it very difficult to hike out in the strong winds. We needed more rail
meat! Please, anyone else involved in the racing, send in anything
you can remember and we'll add it to the writeup!
