Summary
June 24
We had a great turnout for the start of WINSA's SUMMER SERIES !
Thanks
to the participation of the 8 skippers of Slingshot, Blue Bayou, Lucky
Jim, Grins, Blue Moon, Aileron, Tango, and Rossinante, we have enough boats
for two classes, and the race is on for the trophies of the Summer Series!
Our appreciated
committee volunteers were Mike Schott, Byron Skubi, and Larry Munns!
Thanks guys! Without your time and help and involvement, we wouldn't have
our races!
At 5:30 the water was pretty glassy, but Committee found the wind at the
mouth of Penn Cove and set a great course and by the start time, we had great
steady breezes to set up our starts and take off!
Race 1 began successfully
with a clean start, almost all the boats on the line, and there was
a good race to the windward mark, after which the two classes distinguished
themselves immediately, the racing class flying their kites and the cruising class going wing & wing. The
racers were all done with the leeward mark by the time the cruisers used it
and the racers were milling around waiting for the next race when the cruisers
had their finish, which was a close battle between Aileron and Rossinante, with
Rossinante edging across with the class bullet!
Race 2 began with the racing
fleet causing some excitement ... each boat making contact with another,
shouting was heard from one boat to another, and what has been passed along
to me is the following descripton, as seen from the committee: Grins came down
on Lucky Jim, who was coming up to do his point, Sling Shot was forced
up and he came up into Blew Bayou, who wasn't sheeted in under control
yet so he couldn't react....of course our good natured skippers took the fair
responsibility and Dave did his 720 penalty, though the WINSA rules
only required a 360, and Nate did his 360 towards the end of the race,
so no protest flags were flown, but we don't have a protest committee anyway,
and WINSA racers operate under a fair play honor system, and our skippers play
by the rules voluntarily. Good job, and good spirit, folks!
The second race proceeded and concluded,
for the cruising class, anyway, almost identically to the first
race, in order and placement. Official Order of Finish for each race was
as follows:
