'Round Whidbey 2001

Results

The times for the "A" Fleet were amazingly close and would have been closer had a couple of boats been closer to the starting line. That's a pretty good sign of balanced performance.

This year's race was won by a single hander, Skip Meisch, in the smallest and slowest boat in the fleet. As Slow Flight was still sailing south to the Baby Island turning point, line honors were already being taken by Sangvind which is twice the length of 22 foot Slow Flight. Skip is the only singlehander on record to ever tackle this race.

The Baby Island distance was 31.5 nm, half the distance of the Round Whidbey track, but the wind provided lots of exercise. Crew members said they enjoyed the exhileration.

Among the more notable events of the day were Bankshot blowing out its jib and Jim McAlpine getting locked up in the only hole on the course.
Watching Sangvind and Heart of Gold outside Deception Pass was interesting. The waves tossed them around like they were Lasers.
