The 'Round Whidbey and the Saratoga Sprint are the two long races of the season. The 'Round Whidbey is the tough one. In 2008 this race will take place on May 17-18. The race starts between the Race Committee Boat anchored near Deception Island and an orange mark on West Point (NW tip of Whidbey Island) at 9:00 am. The course then proceeds SSW down the west side of Whidbey Island to its southern tip at Possession Point, then northward up the east side of Whidbey Island. The green buoys at Partridge Point, Double Bluff, Scatchet Head and Possession Point are all kept to port. The finish line is between the Race Committee Boat and Coast Guard buoy G-5 at the entrance to Oak Harbor. The distance is 65 nautical miles. The 'Round Whidbey race can be over 24 hours long. Some skippers use this race to prepare for the prestigious Swiftsure Race. The challenges are tidal current, wind, commercial traffic, and crew stamina. To enter, yachts must comply with PIYA Catagory II safety requirements (see notice of race for details and exceptions), must have a current signed copy of a PIYA Certification of Category on board, and have a PHRF NW rating. A Skipper's meeting and pre-race barbeque are held on the evening before the start of the race (check our calendar for the exact times) at the Cornet Bay dock & launch area in Deception Pass State Park. Sailing Instructions will be distributed at the Skippers' Meeting. A completed Entry Form and entry fee must be submitted to the Race Committee prior to the start of the race in accordance with the notice of race. Skippers and their crews meet at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club at the end of the race and trophies are awarded to the winners.
