Sept 6 | Sept 13 | Sept 20 | Sept 27 | Summary

September 20th
Beautiful start, awful finish. Bob Miles in SLINGSHOT and Jim McAlpine in LUCKY JIM lead the pack around the first mark and popped their spinnakers. The other boats didn't have a chance. Then at the second mark they both stopped and let the fleet catch up. I watched SLINGSHOT creep around the mark--it must have taken a full minute. Just behind and no faster was LUCKY JIM.

Down the course came Mike Schott in ROSSINANTE, followed by late starters Rodney Hubbard (BLIDEVIND) and Bob Shambora (SARABAND). Right near the second mark, they seemed to throw out their anchors. They became so slow they were painful to watch.

What should have been a 45-minute course for SLINGSHOT turned out to be an hour and 22 minutes. LUCKY JIM crossed the finish line three minutes before the official quitting time and ROSSINANTE crossed within seconds of quitting time.

Had BLIDEVIND started on time (three minutes late) she would have been among the finishers. SARABAND, too, (ten minutes late) would easily have crossed on time. Sorry about that!
